APPROACH
Philosophy
Every place carries its own identity, formed by its architecture, ecology, climate, history, culture, and the particular qualities of the land itself. Our work begins with respect for that identity. We look beyond what a site is to understand what it has the potential to become.
This requires restraint as much as invention. Rather than impose a predetermined aesthetic, we seek to reveal what is distinctive about each place and amplify it through landscape. Architecture and nature are considered not as separate elements, but as parts of a larger composition; each capable of strengthening the other.
Our studio is shaped by curiosity rather than convention. We question assumptions, explore unexpected relationships, and approach each commission without a prescribed solution. This freedom allows the work to respond authentically to its circumstances and gives every project an identity of its own.
We are drawn to landscapes that engage the senses and unfold through experience and places shaped by movement, discovery, intimacy, openness, shadow, water, vegetation, and time. The landscape should not simply be seen. It should change how a place is felt.
And it should never feel finished.
Landscape is alive. It grows, adapts, weathers, and acquires character. We embrace this evolution, creating places intended to deepen their relationship with architecture, nature, and those who inhabit them over time.
Architecture. Nature. Place.
Approach
01 / Place
Place is more than setting. It is the convergence of land, architecture, climate, culture, time, and the conditions that give a landscape its identity.
Our studio was shaped in Sarasota, where architecture and landscape have long shared an unusually close relationship. Here, the subtropical environment is defined by contrasts; land and water, sun and deep shade, openness and enclosure, resilience and fragility.
Sarasota's architectural legacy further reinforces an idea central to our work that buildings and landscape can be conceived not as separate objects, but as a singular experience of place.
This perspective extends beyond Florida. We approach every site without a predetermined aesthetic, searching instead for the qualities that could exist only there. The landscape becomes a response to its surroundings while revealing something more about them.
A landscape can only belong to one place.
02 / Experience
We are interested in the way landscape unfolds, the relationship between movement and stillness, openness and enclosure, prospect and refuge. A place is rarely understood from a single point of view; it is revealed through time, movement, and changing conditions.
Our work considers these relationships as a continuous spatial experience. Architecture, landscape, and the spaces between them are composed together, allowing thresholds to soften and distinctions between interior and exterior to become less certain.
This sensibility is deeply informed by Florida, where climate encourages an unusually fluid relationship between building and landscape. Gardens become extensions of architecture, shade defines space, and water and vegetation shape atmosphere as much as form.
We seek an experience that is both intuitive and unexpected; one that reveals itself gradually and leaves something to be discovered.
Design understood through experience.
03 / Collaboration
Every commission is a relationship. We approach collaboration as an exchange of ideas, between client and designer, architecture and landscape, aspiration and place.
Our process is inherently personal. We listen closely to understand not only what our clients need, but how they want to live, gather, retreat, and experience their surroundings. These conversations reveal the subtleties that cannot be found in a program alone and allow the landscape to become a genuine reflection of those who inhabit it.
Throughout the life of a project, OLA provides a clear and consistent creative voice, working alongside the client and a carefully assembled team of architects, designers, builders, artists, and craftspeople. Each decision is considered in relation to the whole, preserving the clarity of the original idea as the project moves from concept to realization.
The experience is one of trust, discretion, and shared ambition, giving our clients the confidence to engage deeply in the process while allowing the studio the freedom to discover something unexpected.
The result is not simply a landscape designed for a client, but a place that could belong to no one else.
Design begins with a conversation.
04 / Stewardship
Landscape is never static. It grows, adapts, weathers, and changes with time. We see this evolution not as something to control, but as an essential part of the work.
Stewardship begins with an understanding of what a place can sustain. Climate, ecology, water, material, and patterns of growth inform decisions that allow the landscape to establish its own resilience while remaining true to the larger design idea.
This perspective is particularly meaningful in Sarasota, where beauty and vulnerability exist in close proximity. Coastal conditions, seasonal water, intense sun, and an extraordinary subtropical ecology ask us to design with an awareness of both permanence and change.
Our responsibility extends beyond the completion of a project. We consider how a landscape will mature, how architecture will settle into its surroundings, and how the relationship between people and place will deepen over time.
The measure of a landscape is revealed through time.
